Broadening bioethics to include global health ethics
The objectives are the following:
1. To identify the ethical issues associated with the human impacts upon land, water, and atmosphere.
2. To determine how we can harness new technological developments, including those that rely on artificial intelligence, to promote positive global health impacts.
3. To evaluate what the responsibilities of human beings are in relation to the promotion of positive global health impacts.
The associated research questions are the following:
1. What are the ethical issues associated with the human impacts upon land, water, and atmosphere?
2. How can we harness new technological developments, including those that rely on artificial intelligence, to promote positive global health impacts?
3. What are the responsibilities of human beings in relation to the promotion of positive global health impacts?
The following outcomes will be produced:
1. The resident will, early on in the residency, present a short overview of the nature of the issue to interested co-residents who will be provided with a one page summary of the project.
2. A book will be submitted to a publisher at the end of the project. Financial support from the Fondation Brocher is requested to enable the book to be published with a high-profile publisher. To this effect, an agent will be mobilised.
3. The resident will present his findings at least once to interested co-residents and others who may be interested, as well as to members of the Philosophie unit at the Université de Fribourg, to elicit feedback to prepare the final report. Other presentations may be organised through other contacts that the resident has, for example with members of the Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology. The scientific report will then be provided to the Scientific Committee of the Fondation Brocher.
4. After the residency, findings will be presented at relevant bioethics conferences that move beyond patient-doctor relationships and engage with the ethical issues associated with our global health impacts.

Is the production of in-vitro meat the answer to the public health, animal welfare, and environmental concerns associated with conventional animal products?
This project will aim to address the following questions:
1. What are the ethical issues associated with the production of in-vitro meat?
2. How should we weigh up the costs and benefits of in-vitro meat in order to inform the responsible production of, and policy-making on, the novel foods created by this technology?
3. Are there any alternatives that could be used to provide these benefits, and if so, might these be preferable?
