Just Ideological Freedom? Evaluating the Impact of Conscience Exemptions to Public Policy on Public and Individual Health
Peter West-Oram received his PhD at the University of Birmingham, where he wrote his thesis on global health justice. He is currently employed as a Senior Research Fellow in the Emmy Noether Research Group at Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany. Project Overview Peter’s work currently focuses on ethical practice in health care provision, with a particular emphasis on the responsibilities of health care providers, and the extent of any right to conscientious objection in the health care context. This work examines both particular case studies in health care provision, such as refusals to participate in the provision of contested health services, and theoretical questions relating to the compatibility of absolute rights to conscientious objection in the health care context with the principles of liberal pluralism and multiculturalism. His other work in political philosophy and bioethics is concerned with justice in global health, and the role of solidarity as a normative, and practical principle for motivating the just delivery of effective health care worldwide.
