Science Communication: Beyond Deficit and Dialogue
The volume aims to provide a new synthesis for Science Communication Studies. It uses the historical literature of the field, new empirical data, and thinking from other disciplines (including organisational theory and political science) to argue that the frames which are typically used to think about science communication – and in particular the dichotomous contrast that is presented between one-way, ‘deficit model’ communication and interactive ‘dialogue’ approaches – occlude important features of how it is imagined and practised. It thus combines an overview of the field (including discussion of the contemporary landscape of science communication practice and the central narratives of its history and analytical development) with an assessment of its lacunae and the use of theory from other domains to indicate new directions for research.
I am interested in the public communication of science and technology and how it influences identity constructions of citizens, organizations and nations.
