Non-Domination and the Limits of Relational Autonomy
My objective with this project is to write several topic-specific papers demonstrating the superiority of the non-domination conceptual framework to those of both liberal and relational conceptions of autonomy. Specifically, these manuscripts will address (1) respect for autonomy in transnational surrogacy agreements; (2) respect for autonomy in international clinical research; (3) respect for autonomy and the role of the social determinants of health in public health policy decision-making. (I also have an outline of a paper that is not bioethics-specific about the role of respect for autonomy in the normative assessment of the exploitation of sweatshop labor.) After completion of these topic-specific manuscripts, I plan to write a more theoretical manuscript arguing for the superiority of the conception of freedom of non-domination to both liberal and relational accounts of autonomy as the relevant desiderata for respect for individuals across a range of social and political interactions.
