Conflict and understanding in science communication of synthetic biology
Britt Wray is a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen where she studies science communication with a focus on synthetic biology. Earlier this year she was a Visiting Scholar at the Arthur L. Carter Institute for Journalism at New York University. She was also previously Visiting Scholar at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Outside of academia, Britt has worked for several years in public radio with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and as a freelancer for various US shows and podcasts. Her media work focuses on science storytelling. Britt researches public engagement around emerging biotechnologies, such as synthetic biology and genome editing. In her PhD project she is developing a new creative forum for interactive engagement about controversial science, and looking at how publics generate meaning in engagement settings. She is currently finishing her first science book for general audiences, where she investigates the world of “de-extinction,” which aims to bring aspects of extinct species back to life with biotechnology.
