Their child, her pregnancy: towards a relational approach to surrogacy
Drawing on the procreative scenarios arising from surrogacy agreements in Canada, this work aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon based on empirical data. Drawn from my doctoral dissertation in applied human sciences, the monograph aims to answer the following question: how do the experiences of those directly involved in surrogacy provide a better understanding of the construction of the relationship to motherhood and fatherhood in a context of fragmentation of their components? With the aim of proposing a theorization rooted in lived experience, my research approach has three specific objectives: 1) to understand how the people involved in an agreement represent their respective contributions to the parental project through surrogacy; 2) to identify the practices of appropriation and distancing of motherhood and parenthood deployed by these people, as well as the personal, social and normative factors that promote or inhibit their emergence; and 3) to shed light on the relational dimension of the childbearing process.
