Cross-Border Medical Travel from Ireland to the United Kingdom: The Social, Political, and Ethical Implications of Seeking Abortion Care Abroad
The proposed Brocher Residency project has 4 distinct but interrelated objectives:
Objective #1: To develop an argument for a scientific manuscript based on my research in London and Liverpool, the United Kingdom and policy analysis conducted in 2017 and spring 2018. This effort will focus on creating a new and engaging argument about cross-border medical travel based on the case of Ireland-UK and the social, political, and ethical implication of this phenomenon, but also contextualized within the European health policy landscape.
Objective #2: To write a scientific peer-reviewed article based on anthropological research conducted in 2017 and 2018, and to select the best-suited peer-reviewed journal for publication. The process of writing will include seeking peer reviewers to provide feedback on the manuscript.
Objective #3: To consult with experts at the World Health Organization – Department of Reproductive Health and Research, where I have established professional connections from my Brocher Residency in 2015 in order to contextualize my UK data and Brussels policy data with knowledge from the domain of policy and international health research.
Objective #4: To interact with Brocher Researchers on the topic of cross-border health travel, medical ethics, and health policy issues in order to enrich my own scholarly perspectives through interdisciplinary exchanges, but also contribute my anthropological perspective to the scientific discussions with my Brocher colleagues.

“European Union & Health Policy: The Question of Unregulated Assisted Reproductive Technologies.”
My Brocher Residency objectives are: 1.) developing the data collected in 2014 in Poland and at three EU public health and policy venues into a scholarly publication and dissemination 2.) consulting with reproductive health and policy experts at the World Health Organization – Department of Reproductive Health and Research, as well as experts at the World Medical Association, 3.) interacting with visiting researchers at the Brocher Centre about the topic of health policy and regulation The main expected outcome is the submission of a scientific peer-reviewed article based on my anthropological research conducted in summer of 2014 to the Social Science & Medicine journal by the end of my Residency at the Brocher Centre. Another outcome is the establishment of professional relationships with visiting researchers at the Brocher Centre, as well as with experts at the WHO and WMA, with whom I plan to consult about my data and the topic of ART regulation in an international context.
