Human Rights in Public Health Emergency Prevention, Preparedness & Response

Organizers:

Event Background & Summary
The organizers and invited delegates to this Concluding Workshop have worked together over the past year to address normative gaps between international human rights law and global health law by developing Human Rights Principles for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (‘Principles’).
When finalized, these Principles will serve as a consensus-based elaboration of international legal standards relating to public health and human rights during health emergencies. Jointly funded by the Government of Canada and the Open Society Foundations, this project is co-led by the Global Health Law Consortium (GHLC), a research network of the world’s leading scholars in global health law, and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), an award-winning NGO defending human rights worldwide. At an interdisciplinary convening of experts in Italy in November 2021, delegates deliberated on a preliminary draft of the Principles and agreed to revise this draft on the basis of virtual regional dialogues with human rights defenders at the frontlines of local COVID-19 responses.
This Concluding Workshop at Fondation Brocher will bring together these experts to take stock of key findings from regional consultations, and to finalize the Principles, as well as accompanying legal commentary.
