Mitigating the Impact of the Next Pandemic - Understanding the Successes and the Failures of the Economic Response to Covid-19
The objective of the proposed project is to analyse the data and literature regarding mitigation strategies designed to minimize the economic impact of both HIV and Covid-19, so as to better prepare national and international policymakers for the next pandemic. The outputs of the project include 2 peer-reviewed articles on the topics: 1) lessons learned from economic mitigation strategies during Covid-19 and HIV/AIDS and 2) the economic response to the next pandemic.
The expected outcomes include a greater understanding by policymakers (both national and international) who are uncertain how the mitigation strategies to current pandemics (HIV and Covid-19) have occurred and to better prepare them to respond to the next pandemic. Targeted policymakers would include bilateral donors (e.g., economists at the Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) division as USAID), as well as international policymakers and economists at the Global Fund and other international agencies. The analysis will also inform national policymakers within developing countries who may not be aware of efforts to mitigate pandemics and the lessons that have been learned from these efforts.
