Exploring ethical issues in the treatment of unidentified dead bodies in global health emergencies
In this research, I will:
i. Identify key actors, the ethical issues they face, and the solutions they devise (what ‘should be done’, ‘is allowed to be done’, ‘must be done’) to manage UDBs ethically.
ii. Provide a comprehensive picture of how 'death systems' in the study locations address the matters of managing UDBs, allowing for a cross-contextual comparison.
iii. Deepen our understanding of the complexity of family structures and relationships concerning unidentified dead bodies.
iv. Apply the findings to develop policies for working with unidentified dead bodies informed by social/ethical research on people's expectations and ethical considerations (e.g., an ethical framework for identification).
