A comparative investigation of visual representations of tropical diseases in early twentieth century Malawi and Sudan
During my projected 3-month residency, I hope to achieve the following three objectives and subsequent outcomes
1. Transform my thesis chapter ‘Smallpox and the vision of governance’ into a journal article for Medical History
Outcome: A peer-reviewed journal article published in Medical History. The article is expected to add to and make an orignal contribution to works exploring the relationshhips between medicine and photography.
2. Create a book proposal based on my PhD and identify three potential publishers
Outcome: A book proposal that highlights my innovative methodological approaches to engaging with archival material, an overview of key findings and contributions to anthropology and the history of medicine. The proposal includes a synopsis of the book, an analysis of the target audience and a distribution strategy.
3. Develop a set of guidelines that will communicate how we should be looking at and using historic medical photographs through engagment with a diverse group of stakeholders to establish a community of principles.
Outcome: A set of guidelines that are expected to contribute to the development of best practices for the use of historic medical photographs in research, education and public engagement. The guidelines will be developed through a collaborative process to provide a critical framework for interpretating sensitive material. The recommendations will address issues such as ethical considerations, the use of context and language.
