Fair pathways to low-carbon healthcare
The goal of my PhD thesis is to examine the implications of carbon emissions for fair and efficient priority setting in healthcare. I am pursuing PhD by publication, through three main scientific articles, at the University of Bergen, Norway:
1. Priority setting and net zero healthcare: how much health can a tonne of carbon buy? (Published in BMJ, November 2021)
Primary objective - To examine carbon emissions from the healthcare sector and develop a conceptual framework to describe the relevance for priority setting in health
2. Fair Pathways to Net Zero Healthcare (Published in Nature Medicine, May 2023)
Primary objective - To outline the principles of fair pathways to net-zero healthcare that are attentive to health and socioeconomic inequalities within and between countries.
3. Identifying fair pathways to net zero healthcare: a qualitative study of policy makers (Work in progress)
Primary Objective - To understand how health policy makers acknowledge, frame and navigate potential trade-offs involved in pursuing net zero healthcare.
While at Brocher I will be working on my 3rd article as well as the introductory chapter to my thesis. This ties together different threads of the work, incorporating author reflexivity, the relationship to philosophy of science and broader methodological and ethical considerations.
