Targeted Populations: Ethical Issues in Physical Activity Promoting Technologies
The general objective of this project is to examine the processes of utilization of HPA promoting technologies among vulnerable populations. The specific objectives include the following: 1) to describe the situation of the biomedicalization of the body in HPA technology practices as utilized by health researchers and government agencies; 2) to provide an in-depth analysis and evaluation of previously collected qualitative interview data of research participants and non-participants from identified vulnerable populations; 3) to raise key questions using frameworks of environmental justice and critical production of knowledge about the ways that identities of vulnerable populations are constructed and transformed through their participation in biomedical technologies. Of additional interest is the broader question of the contribution to society of scientific advances, particularly in the development of measurements of HPA, without adequate protections and responsiveness to respect and justice as outlined by US guidelines on ethical research. A Brocher Foundation residency would allow intensive focused time to conduct these analyses and plan and develop an article for publication.
