Representation of male bodies and male identities in sexual health promotion texts
Objectives
Primary Objective:
• To analyze the construction of health-enhancing interventions or behaviours, particularly those for HIV prevention, in media campaigns for men’s sexual health.Secondary Objectives:
• To identify and interrogate the kinds of male identities that are constructed in the selected health promotion texts.
• To identify and theorize the kinds of male bodies that are constructed in the representations of male sexual health in selected health promotion texts.Following a critical evaluation of both body and identity representations, the final objective offers practical and social relevance:
• To make recommendations for how media campaigns, which are directed at men’s sexual health promotion, can apply impactful communication and discursive strategies.
Dr Prevan Moodley, formally lecturer at Vista University and University of Pretoria, is currently senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. Registered as a counselling psychologist, he teaches evolutionary psychology, health psychology, and the application of gender and racial diversity to psychotherapy. His research expertise lies in critical methods directed at LGBT topics, bioethics, and health.
